Manchester United have completed the signing of Nemanja Matic in a deal worth £40 million from Chelsea and he will now reunite with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.
Manchester United had gone cold in the transfer market after signing Romelu Lukaku but Mourinho will be highly satisfied with his latest acquisition.
The pair worked and won the Premier League together at Chelsea. Matic has been on the radar of United for some time, with the Portuguese boss desperate to sign a holding midfielder this summer and he is keen on bringing his former player to Old Trafford.
Matic was left out of Chelsea’s squad for their pre-season tour to China to sort out his future. He formed a strong partnership with N’Golo Kante in the midfield as Chelsea won the Premier League title last season but the arrival of Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco this summer and Antonio Conte also preferring the French international ahead of Matic pushed the Serbian midfielder towards the exit door at Stamford Bridge.
The 28-year-old was pictured in United training kit and had his medical on Sunday. Matic becomes Man United third signing this summer after Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof taking their summer spending to over $141.75 million. He could make his debut against Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on August 8.
Speaking after completing the deal, Matic said
“I am delighted to have joined Manchester United,” the 28-year-old Serbian said. “To work with Jose Mourinho once again was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.
“I have enjoyed my time at Chelsea and would like to thank the club and the fans for their support. I cannot wait to meet my new team-mates and to start training with them.
“This is a very exciting time for the club and I am looking forward to playing my part in creating more history for this great club.”
Meanwhile, Mourinho is still interested in signing a winger and has Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic and Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale on his transfer list.
