Thomas Varmaelen predicts great future for Luis Enrique ahead of Chelsea move

According to reports from Spain earlier this week, former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique is nearer to becoming Chelsea manager as his agent and Chelsea’s representative are having a smooth discussion over contract terms.

According to Spanish media outlet Don Balon, former Arsenal defender Thomas Varmaelen foresees a great future for the Spaniard should he finally complete his move to the Premier League Champions.

Despite making few appearances for the Catalans during Luis Enrique’s time as the Blaugrana boss, Thomas Varmaelen believes the coach possesses the characteristics of a great manager who is capable of taking Chelsea to another level next season.

The Belgian international further told reporters that the manager could achieve what Pep Guardiola is doing for Premier League runaway leaders Manchester City, if given the time and support.

According to the defender, Enrique is an understanding manager who knows his players’ physical condition and mental strength. He also maintains good relationship with his players and coaching staff, according to the former Arsenal man.

Meanwhile, Varmaelen also spoke on Arsene Wenger’s hope of retaining his job beyond the end of the season. After spending five years at Arsenal, the Belgian defender backed Arsene Wenger to keep his job despite numerous calls for his sack from the worrisome Gunners faithfuls who seem to have lost patience with the Frenchman.

According to Varmaelen, Arsenal’s problem is more than sacking Wenger who has been coaching the club for two decades. He also showed his confidence in Wenger’s ability to start winning trophies with the club.
