Last season’s PFA player of the season, N’golo Kante, has failed to replicated the form of last season at Chelsea due to the absence of his midfielder partner Nemanja Matic, that is the sentiment of former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino.
Kante joined Chelsea from Leicester City in the penultimate summer and his prowess in the middle of the pack along Matic ensured that Antonio Conte won the Premier League title for Chelsea after a calamitous season under Mourinho.
Shockingly, Matic was allowed to join Manchester United in a £40million deal and he was replaced with Tiemoue Bakayoko. Apparently, the departure of Matic has hurt the Blues who failed woefully to defend the title and are out of the top four of the Premier League.
kante has been able to tick the boxes of the Blues but Conte has alternated between Cesc Fabregas, Bakayoko and even Drinkwater as his partner. And Cascarino reckons that Matic is the most suitable partner for the Kante.
“N’Golo Kanté has really missed having Nemanja Matic alongside him in the centre of Chelsea’s midfield this season,” Cascarino told The Times.
“Tiemoue Bakayoko was brought in last summer but has failed to make anything like the impact of the Serb, who joined Manchester United.
“Danny Drinkwater, another new midfield signing, has been given very little time on the pitch, and I don’t think Cesc Fabregas, for all his qualities, is an ideal partner for Kante.
“At least Kante has overcome a difficult start to the season to find some form.
“His running ability is just incredible — he is the ultimate athlete.”
Kante was in action for the Blues in their 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town on Wednesday night. Their hope of Champions League qualification now depends on a Liverpool slip on the final day of the League.
