In the penultimate season, the potency of Arsenal’s attack was questioned when Arsenal ended the season as runners up to Leicester and calls grew for Arsene Wenger to replace Oliver Giroud as the Gunner’s lead striker with a top-notch striker.
Typical with Arsene Wenger, he unearth Spanish star Lucas Perez, amid the expectation for a marquee signing, who joined Arsenal from Deportivo La Coruna in a £17.1 m deal last summer.
Perez, has failed to make his mark at the Emirates, though it can be argued that Wenger has not given him the chance to shine despite his relatively good record.
His lack of game time raised speculation over his future with us and there is now further doubt because the striker is staying put in London while his Arsenal teammates jet out to Australia for their pre-season, as per reports.
Ahead of Arsenal’s friendly games against Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers, the Gunners flew to Australia on Sunday and the absence of Perez is a clear indication that a deal for his transfer away from Arsenal could be in the offing.
Although, Spanish football expert, Carlos Rosende, has claimed that Perez will remain with Arsenal in London next season. This he posited on twitter.
“Lucas Pérez does not travel to Australia with Arsenal for friendlies on July 13/15, remains in London. But his departure is not imminent.”
We cannot ascertain the veracity of Rosende report, we know for sure that as long as Wenger tarries at Arsenal, Perez will remain a fringe player and the recent signing of Alexandre Lacazette means he has fallen downward in the selection perking order of strikers.
Deportivo, as well as Espanyol, Sevilla, and Malaga are all in chase of the player but we wait to see how it pans out.
