Arsenal kicked off the summer transfer window in swash-buckling style, as they announced the signing of Sead Kolasinac from Schalke 04 swiftly, and the eventual signing of Alexandre Lacazette going into the new season. However, transfer dealings have been slow to say the least.
Arsene Wenger apparently was satisfied with the squad at his disposal but he narrowly escaped a backlash from the fans after Arsenal rallied a 4-2 home win against Leicester City last week. The ripple effect of the scare is taking effect and it is now looks as though the club would get busy as the transfer window approaches its termination.
Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth has revealed Arsenal are set to clear the deadwoods before making efforts in signing new players.
“The priority at the Emirates is to trim the squad before making any more signings.” the Sky journalist said
“Arsenal are listening to offers for Carl Jenkinson and Mathieu Debuchy.
“[And] talks are continuing with Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain over their futures.
“Both have a year left on their Arsenal contracts.”
Carl Jenkinson has been linked with a surprise to a number of Italian clubs, with Cagliari, Hellas Verona and Sassuolo reported to be circling for the right back. His current contract runs out next summer and there are no talks of extending either.
Many fans won’t be happy to see Jack Wilshere leave the club but Wenger’s hands seems to be tied as the 25-year-old seems to have lost form and confidence. His injury while at Bournemouth scuppered his progress last season and it is now reported that Aston Villa are keen on signing him.
Most fans seem to have forgotten Mathieu Debuchy who lost his place to hector Bellerin. The 32-year-old was on the verge of completing a permanent switch to Nice but the deal hit snag. However, it remains to be seen if he would stay at Arsenal this summer.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been linked with a £35 million move to Chelsea. It is reported that Wenger is weighing his options as the offer seems to be quite irresistible for player whose contract expires next summer. Chamberlain has reported told Chelsea he wants a £150k-a-week package to complete the transfer from their capital neighbours.
