Arsenal have been met with hard stance from Monaco in their pursuit of Thomas Lemar and as per reports, the London club could go back to Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez as Roma has ended their interests in the attacker.
The Algerian international has been on the radar of Arsenal for some time now. But the club turned their attention to and stepped up their interest in Lemar – though with Mahrez as a back-up option – paving the way for Roma to enter the race to sign Mahrez.
However, the Italian club’s two separate bids of £21 million and over £30 million were rejected by the former Premier League champion forcing them to end their pursuit of the player.
With that and the possibility of Lemar moving to the Emirates Stadium extremely low, especially if Kylian Mabppe quits Monaco, Arsenal are planning to re-launch their interest in the Leicester playmaker.
Mahrez is keen on quitting the King Power Stadium and Arsenal has been touted as his preferred destination. A move to the Emirates was thought to be on the cards for him last summer before it cooled off besides, Arsene Wenger also claimed in June that the player could move to Arsenal.
“We have not made a bid, but personally, I like the player, yes,” Wenger told beIN Sports. “I think he made a huge impact when they won the championship.
“Like at everybody else at Leicester, this season has been more challenging, but it doesn’t take away from his qualities.”
Mahrez has been valued at £50 million by Leicester and with Arsenal apparently the only biding for him now, their coast is clear for them to sign him if they are ready to meet the Foxes asking price.
