Revealed: striker dropped Arsene Wenger’s call to sign deal amid keen interest

Time was when Arsenal were second best to Barcelona in terms of their style of play, and they attracted the first grade of players around the world because of Arsene Wenger’s reputation.

Former Arsenal star Emmanuel Adebayor reckons that he was delighted when he got a call from Arsene Wenger to join Arsenal, revealing the conversation that took place bewteen them, reports Daily Star.

Adebayor started his journey to stardom with Metz in France after playing for his country club. His impressive show-offs earned him a contract with Monaco in the summer of 2003 before Wenger pounce on him for a deal in 2006.

He became first choice for Arsenal in his second season with us but his form continued to dwindle at that time. However his best season with us came when he surpassed the 20 goal margin, scoring 24 League goals in 36 appearances in 2007/08 season.

He made a move to Manchester City and drew controversy to himself after his goal celebration against Arsenal. Nonetheless, he claims Wenger was his main reason for joining Arsenal after he called by the French tactician.

He revealed that he initially dropped the call on Wenger”

“I was not getting a lot of playing time at Monaco, it was the winter break so I went back to Togo.

“I was playing a game of football with some friends when one of my friends ran over with a phone.

“He told me it was Arsene Wenger, I thought he was playing a joke on me.

“I took the phone and hung up.

“Wenger immediately called back and said, I recognised his voice it was him. How could you not recognise it, he was everywhere on television and was so well respected for what he had achieved at Arsenal.

“He told me that he wanted me at Arsenal, I told him, ‘If you want me I will jump on the first flight to London and sign on the dotted line’.

“In just two days I signed for Arsenal, I could not believe it.

Adebayor did not win any trophy with Arsenal but won the Copa Del Rey with Real Madrid. He left Arsenal for Manchester City, from where he was loaned to Real Madrid before he joined Tottenham. However, he has  failed to make any mark since leaving Arsenal. He currently plays for Istanbul Basaksehir.
