Arsenal may not have been in the news for good reasons in the recent days, due to a nasty injury to German defender Shkodran Mustafi during a World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijain amid other mixed news on the future of their top players.
However, Alex Iwobi’s stunning goal that saw Nigeria qualify for the Russia 2018 World Cup could also be something to cheer on by the Emirates’ faithfuls.
In recent time, the Nigerian youngster has had a mixed senior career with the North London side, while making the cut on several occasions this season due to the absence of Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after the latter completed a shock deadline day transfer to Liverpool.
Iwobi who rose through the ranks at the Arsenal academy, broke into the first team in the 2015/16 season, putting up dazzling displays to become a new rave at the Emirates.
However, his form dwindled due to his lack of goals and playing time but much has to be said about his talent and potential in the midfield at his tender age.
The 21-year-old could finally be taking the huge step in his career due to the uncertainty in the future of Mesut Ozil, who had refused to sign a new deal with the Gunners, despite having less than a year to run on his current deal, leaving him to negotiate with other clubs during the next January transfer window, before leaving as a free agent next summer.
Without Ozil, Iwobi has been one of the several names that is being tipped to fill in the boots of the German playmaker, with his dazzling displays and composure on the ball. The Nigerian youngster also possesses more defensive ability than the former Real Madrid due to his broad frame, coupled with an ability to dribble past opponents in tricky fashion.
However, just like Ozil, Iwobi would have to work on his goal-scoring abilities due to his inconsistency in front of goals, but it is noteworthy thatmuch is needed to be learnt by the 21-year-old midfielder while playing in the number 10 role.
