Greek and Borrussia Dortmund defender centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos is on the verge of becoming Arsenal’s first summer signing, this is according to report.
The media wave of Arsenal have been awash this week with reports of a defensive overhaul happening at the London club, leading the club’s interest in Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Çağlar Söyüncü, Kalidou Koulibaly and Jonny Evans.
While the veracity of those reports are yet unverified, Papastathopoulos is said to be the prime target for the Gunners as it is given that it was Sven Mislintat that signed him for Borrussia from Werder Bremen, and he is looking to bring him to the Emirates.
Sven Mislintat, who is currently in charge of player’s recruitment at Arsenal is going on with player’s search despite the fact that a manager has not be appointed for the club. Mislintat will continue recruit players for the club while whoever succeeds Wenger will just be saddled with the responsibility of coaching.
Papastathopoulos has proved his mettle beyond doubt for Dortmund. He has just one year left on his current contract and it appears that he will be lacing his boots for Arsenal next season.’
According to Skysport reporter Kaveh Solhekol, the 29-year-old star is primed to join Arsenal ahead of the coming season.
“He’s a player our colleagues at Sky in Italy are reporting talks with him are at an advanced stage,” he told the Sky Sports Transfer Talk podcast.
“They’re saying that a deal is ‘very, very close’.
“We don’t have that information but obviously our colleague at Sky Italy are very reliable when it comes to transfer information.
“They always seem to get fantastic transfer lines and that is what they’re reporting at the moment.”
The reporter went on further to reveal that the brass of the club are working behind the scenes on transfers even though they are yet to secure a replacement for Arsene Wenger.
He added: “It would seem to suggest things are going on behind the scenes at Arsenal.
“Maybe, some of those candidates, the preferred candidates, the leading candidates have been kept informed of where Arsenal are trying to strengthen in this window.
“But centre-back is certainly a priority.”
Arsenal had the worst defensive record among the top seven clubs of the Premier league – with Laurent Koscielny injured to return in December, they are looking for a centre-back but they may sign another given the poor form of Mustafi
