Despite falling off the race for another silverware in the FA Cup, losing to Wolverhampton in the third round, Liverpool are still in the contest for their first trophy since 2005.
Reds succeeded in signing glovesman Alisson Becker from Roma in the summer of 2018, despite fuelled talks of a big fight over the goalkeeper’s services from Chelsea.
Both clubs were hanging on a thread, and were on the brink of going into the new league season without a goalkeeper.
Loris Karius would be laid off, and Thibaut Courtois was on his way to join Los Blancos Real Madrid.
And Alisson was in the middle of a bidding war started by both Premier League outfits. However, the Brazilian had already picked his team and Reds had been a better option for the shot-stopper.
Alisson told FourFourTwo his longing desire to win the Champions League was what helped him to pick sides. Liverpool were five points clear of the Europa League spots in fourth and, from former champions Chelsea. It was clear which side he’d select because Liverpool had a chance at winning the prestigious Champions League this season.
“I chose Liverpool for the same reasons I went to Roma when I left Brazil.”Alisson told FourFourTwo.
“I’ve also admired Liverpool’s history. This is a club with five European Cups in their trophy cabinet. I really wanted to be part of that history.
