Chelsea target and current Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri is set for a meeting with the Italian club’s President and owner Aurelio De Laurentiis. The meeting is believed to hold this week as the manager is set to quit the SerieA runners up amid speculations linking him to the coaching role at Chelsea.
Having led Napoli to a serious title mount for the first time since 1990, Sarri has become one of the favourite managers to replace Antonio Conte at Chelsea. The Italian manager’s work is somewhat under-appreciated by the club’s owner who has refused to raise the coach’s basic annual salary from £1.3m to £3.5m.
Consequently, relations between the owner and the coach is said to have become bitter, even though Aurelio De Laurentiis is fully aware that Maurizio Sarri’s name sits atop Roman Abramovic’s list.
It is believed that Aurelio De Laurentiis hopes that the Italian manager stays beyond the summer. However, he is unwilling to match the manager’s asking salary. Sarri has brought relative success to the Naples despite inheriting virtually the same team from Rafa Benitez three years ago.
Also, the Standard Sport reported that the coach is bent on bringing in top players as part of his terms to stay at the club. However, this may not be in the best interests of Napoli owner.
With the possibility of Sarri’s stay becoming surreal, the club has compiled a list of managers that could replace the Italian. The list includes such stellar names as PSG outgoing manager Unai Emery, Sampdoria’s Marco Giampolo, and many others.
Following Chelsea’s defeat to Newcastle, Conte reiterated his commitment to the Blues as he said he plans to honour his contract which expires next year. The former Juve manager’s stay at Chelsea would largely depend on the stance Napoli and Sarri take.
