Man United to agree €50 million deal for Michael Carrick’s replacement

Michael Carrick is reportedly going to put an end to his successful career by the end of the season. The defensive midfielder has been unable to command a place in Mourinho’s team so far this season having made just two appearances for the team in all competitions due to heart problem.

Michael Carrick’s proposed retirement and Marouane Fellaini not renewing his contract which will expire in the summer has left Mourinho with no other option but to get a replacement during the next transfer market.

The Portuguese is looking at the prospect of bringing Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic as the captain’s replacement according to Spanish outlet AS.

Kovacic 23, is in search of regular first-team action as he is being used as a substitute by Zinedine Zidane. He has featured in just seven appearances for the Los Blancos, playing 712 minutes of action so far this season.

The Croatian is said to cost United a huge sum of €50 million (£44m) due to the buy-out clause in his contract with the Galacticos. Should Mourinho sign him in the summer, Mateo Kovacic will be saddled with the responsibility of protecting the team’s defenders alongside Nemanja Matic while Paul Pogba will be given the opportunity to operate as an attacking midfielder where he performed brilliantly in the first half of the season.
