United have seen their bid for Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic turned down by the club.
The young lad was candy for former boss Jose Mourinho who had informed top United heads about his interest in signing the youngster.
The youngster’s performance has been catching the eyes across Europe. United are not the only ones chasing down the star who performed enterprisingly for Serbia while on international duty last year.
But Milenkovic will not leave Fiorentina and chief executive officer Pantaleo Corvino will not change is mind about it.
Corvino is a stubborn negotiator in transfer deals and has scuppered United’s chances of picking up the coveted defender.
It was thought United would chase other defensive targets outside Mourinho’s list before the Portuguese’s departure, but Corvino confirmed the Red Devils had made a move on the player after Mourinho was laid off.
Corvino told Gazetta dello Sport : “We rejected great offers from Lyon for [Jordan] Veretout, from Marseille for Simeone and from Manchester United for Nikola Milenkovic,”
“[Aurelio] De Laurentiis pressed for [Federico] Chiesa. This is the right way to grow.”
Milenkovic has made 37 appearances for Fiorentina this season, so far.
