Manchester United were linked with a move for Brazil international Willian in the closing stages of the winter transfer window, but there wasn’t enough time to complete the deal before the close of the transaction period.
According to a report via Teamtalk, United boss José Mourinho is set to reignite his interest in the winger when the summer transfer window begins. Despite adding Alexis Sanchez to his attack in January, the Portuguese hopes to bring the Brazilian to Old Trafford to improve his team’s display from both flanks of the pitch ahead of the 2018-19 season.
Willian, 29, whose performance for Chelsea this season has been awesome, could move out of Stamford Bridge as Antonio Conte has opted to start him from the substitute bench.
Since moving to Chelsea from Shaktar Donestk in 2013, the winger has played 223 matches, scoring 43 goals and 37 making assists, but has seen his appearance for the Blues reduced since Conte took charge in 2016.
Should Mourinho succeed in bringing the winger to the Theater of Dreams in the summer, he would become the third player who switched to Old Trafford from Chelsea in four years.
Juan Mata was successfully snatched from Chelsea by Louis Van Gaal in 2014, while Nemanja Matic was convinced by José Mourinho to switch to Old Trafford before the start of the season.
Manchester United could face huge competition from interested clubs — AC Milan, PSG and Barcelona — who are also monitoring the player’s situation at Chelsea.
Willian is currently valued at £28.80m.
