Manchester United are reportedly set to rival Chelsea for Netherlands defender Stefan de Vrij when the summer transfer window opens in June, according to reports. The highly-rated Lazio defender has been solid at the back for his side this season, but he might be joining a Premier League side in the summer with the two giants set to compete for his signature.
Vrij was targeted by Van Gaal in 2015 during his reign as United boss, but he failed in his bid to capture his signature.
The Dutchman could extend his stay with the club according to Don Balon, but he might also join either Chelsea or Manchester United as long as both Premier League clubs are willing to pay his release clause of £20million in the contract offered to him by Lazio.
Having failed to get Vrij in the last summer window, Antonio Conte turned his attention to £32million-rated Germany international defensive midfielder Rudiger whom he got before the end of the summer transaction period.
With Gary Cahill’s poor form and David Luiz not getting along with the coach, Antonio Conte could make Vrij his main target in the summer if he remain as Chelsea boss.
Manchester United manager José Mourinho is also keeping a close tab on the player as he wants to improve his defensive display ahead of the 2018-19 season.
The Portuguese manager who is not willing to sign a new striker in the summer, is set to concentrate on improving his backline and the centre midfield position.
