Manchester United have turned to a familiar ground in a bid to sign a defensive midfielder ahead if the 2017/2018 season.
The Mourinho’s side may be having a torrid time sealing a deal for a striker. However, that has taken a backseat, as it is reported that they are eyeing Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic. Starsport reports that the Red Devils are not happy with how the chase for Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko is panning out, hence they have shifted attention to Matic who is adjudged to be available in the transfer market.
The signing of N’Golo Kante last summer meant Matic would have stiff opposition to contend with in the midfield, although his last season’s starts, 30, is quite healthy; his 61st minute substitution in the FA Cup final game against Arsenal speaks volume. That goes to show he may be handed a fringe role in the upcoming season.
Mourinho has a knack for defensive midfielder as he likes to build strongly from the defence and also playing to keep clean sheets. This has seen him turn to Matic whose current with Chelsea runs out in the summer of 2019. The Blues are likely to play hardball since they may not be open to strengthen a direct rival for the EPL title. However, united stand a chance if the right offer us made.
The report goes on to say that United have agreed a £40 million fee for Matic, and the Independent suggests that the player is likely to complete the Old Trafford move in days.
Let’s see as things pan out.
