Anthony Martial has failed to impress Jose Mourinho and he has been told he needs to emulate Marcus Rashford if he is to earn his place in the Man United squad.
Martial enjoyed a debut season under Louis Van Gaal last season, scoring 11 league goals and he was United’s top scorer but he has struggled to replicate that form under Mourinho this season.
The French striker has started 12 Premier League games this season, completing 90 minutes just three times and managing three goals. Rashford has also struggled for consistency but Mourinho claimed the 19-year-old English forward playing according to instructions has kept him in the first team.
The £36 million signing from Monaco in 2015 was dropped for the 2-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday where Rashford scored the first goal and also put up a stellar performance and has scored two goals in his last three games.
Speaking in a press conference ahead of United’s Europa League second leg clash with Anderlecht, Mourinho said:
“I go in the direction of the players; they have to also come in my direction. The same way I know what the players like, I think the players also know what I like.”
“That’s why Rashford, even without scoring goals, is always a player I trust and I play. He is always a player I support because he is always coming in the direction that I want from a Manchester United player.”
“It’s about going in the direction we like. Is Anthony a player with great potential? Yes, I think. Can he play successfully for me? Yes, I think. But he needs to give me things that I like very much.”
If he doesn’t improve, he is likely to be shown the exit of Old Trafford as Mourinho has lined up several players as transfer target for the Red Devils next term.
Martial can play from the wings or as an out an out attacker but he still has age on his side and would not be short of suitors if he fails to break into the first team of United.
