Manchester United play Ajax in the Europa League final but Jose Mourinho has a thin squad to pick his team from. The Red Devils team is currently depleted as a result of injuries to a chunk of key players.
Despite the number of players sidelined with injuries, Jose Mourinho may be faced with a selection dilemma after Phil Jones revealed that he and all of his teammates wants to feature in the final for United at the Friends Arena, reports Starsports.
Jones picked up an injury while representing the Three Lions in February but he returned to full training earlier this month and started in United’s game against the Saint last night. Jones has been left on the bench and sideline for United more often than not this term, and his start against the Saints was only his third in the League this season.
Jones was quizzed by the media, and he said:
“We’ve got a fantastic squad and we’re all itching to play in the final.
“It’s a final, you’d be lying if you said you didn’t want to play but, as an individual, you can only do what you do best and do well for the team.
“Whoever plays in the final is good enough to go out there, do the business and win the game.
“It’s a huge game for us, we’re excited about it and we’ve won a cup already.
“People will look at the table and say we’ve not had a good season but, ultimately, would you rather finish second and win nothing or win two cups and be in the Champions League?”
Man United are vying for a place in the Champions League next season and their only chance at qualification is a win over Ajax.
The Red Devils are in sixth position on the Premier League table and they face Crystal Palace this Sunday for their final game. Mourinho may have to use all his second fiddle players in that game as the outcome will be insignificant to their already bad season.
Bailly picked up a needless Red card against Celta Vigo, with Rojo out injured, Jones is most likely going to partner Smalling at the heart of defense for United in that game.
