Nemanja Matic decided to join Manchester United four months before he completed the move, this is the claim of Jose Mourinho, according to report.
Matic was not among the Chelsea squad that toured Asia for their pre-season games and he was heavily linked with a move to the Seria A. Manchester United were able to steal a match on Matic’s suitors as Mourinho sanctioned a £40m for him.
Even though Pogba is the most expensive player at Manchester United, he has not featured for the side as much as Matic – the Serbian marksman has featured in 35 League matches for the Red Devils this term and he’ll certainly be in the plan of Manchester United next season as they’ll aim to dethrone City.
Although, United are yet to win a trophy this term, Matic has earned raves of plaudits for his show-offs this season and he’s been branded as a world class midfielder.
Mourinho spoke at the United’s Player of the Year awards, where he claimed that Matic had already laid bare his desire to join Manchester United when the Red Devils played against Chelsea in the FA Cup in March last year.
“In March 2017, Matic told me: ‘I want to play for you, I want to play for Manchester United and I’m going to do it.'” Mourinho told MUTV.
“And he make it happen. He’s been very consistent for the balance of the team.”
The Portuguese manager further explained his reason for given rising star Scott McTominay the Manager’s Player of the Year award instead of Matic.
“When I understood Scott was not getting an award, I change, it’s unacceptable,” he added. “This kid cannot go home without an award.”
Manchester United are yet on the lookout for another midfielder that would replace Michael Carrick and if he’s good enough, he could slug it out for a place with Matic.
