Belgian centre-back Toby Alderweireld has revealed that he is not close to signing a new deal with Tottenham, and this is coming as a massive boost for Man United who have been heavily linked with a move for him, this is according to reports.
Alderweireld was heavily on the transfer radar of Manchester United in the summer but Dani Levy did not sanction his move.
He is in the final year of his currently deal but the club have the option of triggering an extension clause that has a £25 million buyout option. He could also walk away from White Hartlane as a free agent at the end of next season if he does not sign an extension.
Mourinho made the signing of a centre-back one of his priorities in the summer and he didn;t get one. United have had a turbulent start to life in the Premier League and they have been tipped to be heavily involved in the January transfer window.
Sky sports quizzed the 29-year-old if there is progress in talks for the deal and he responded thus.
“Not that I can say, no. I’m focused on Spurs and trying to help the team. That’s all I can do.”
United may take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding the player’s future to pluck him away from the side.
