Man United could be on the verge of signing Uruguayan international and Atletic Madrid centre-back Diego Godin, this is according to reports.
United had an impenetrable back four that ended last season as second best in League. Alas, the form of Eric Bailly and the inconsistency of Chris Smalling has made the Red Devils to concede goals with reckless abandon this term.
Mourinho is on the hunt for a centre-back ahead of the January transfer window like he was in the summer and it appears that he wants a player that would also provide leadership for his team.
The Daily Star reports that United are very confident of snapping up Godin from the Rojiblancos in the January transfer window. The reports adds that the 32-year-old star has a paltry £20million release clause and he is yet to extend his current deal that is billed to expire next summer.
Godin joined Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2010 and he has been a huge part of their success story. However, it is claimed that he wants to call time on his spell with the La Liga outfit and he would join United if a deal is brokered.
Given his age, it is unclear if he would walk straight into the first team of United but one thing is certain, he would provide leadership for the side in training and matches.
