Chelsea could lose their grips in the tight fight for Nicollo Barella this term. The Blues already lost the bid for alternative Leandro Peredes to Paris Saint-Germain this month.
It is understood Paris Saint-Germain pipped the FA Cup holders to the signing of the Zenit St Petersburg’s midfielder.
According to reports, Peredes picked the Ligue One side over Chelsea, which leaves them with Barella.
Cagliari had earlier ruled out a winter move for Barella, shutting out interests from foreign clubs for the star.
But the player is still wanted, not only by Chelsea but a host of other clubs outside England.
Boss Maurizio Sarri wants a solid replacement for departed Spaniard Cesc Fabregas. The midfielder join relegation threatened side Monaco this month, but Blues failed to replace him before his expected exit.
Barella and Peredes had been lined up, but the former’s steep fee had Chelsea looking at Peredes’ direction. With the player set to join Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea could be forced to fork out 50 million pounds for Barella.
Cagliari have told interested clubs, including Inter Milan and Napoli they want to trouser that hefty sum, and if none of them can deliver that in the bag then, they should quit chasing the 21-year-old while it’s early.
