United were pipped last season to the signing of highly rated former Basel centre-half Manuel Akanji.
Akanji batted off interests from the Premier League to join Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund last season as manager Peter Stoger’s first winter signing.
However, the 23-year-old Switzerland international who dons the number 16 shirt for Dortmund, hinted recently that he could switch to play the Red Devils this season.
This has put United on the red alert, as they make attempt to claw back to the top of the Premier League standings.
It is understood United has always been Akanji favourite club since childhood.
The Red Devils still have a sticky situation in their backline and Akanji hinting on a return to play in England for United, could save Jose Mourinho enough time scouring for a formidable figure to man his defence.
“Many know that Manchester United has been my favourite club since childhood. It would be nice to play there, but that’s not an issue right now.” Akanji told Bluewin.
But prising him out of the Signal Iduna Park would prove difficult unless United can fork out a hefty sum for his services, which is very unlikely to happen. Akanji is strongly tied to the German outfit for the next four years.
And he however added later that he is very satisfied playing for Dortmund. “I want to win titles with BVB.”He said.
