French striker Antoine Griezmann seems unhappy at the moment and that has got to with his decision to prove his loyalty to Atletico Madrid, according to Spanish journalist Guillem Balague.
The France international was a top target for Jose Mourinho before the United boss switched his attentions to Romelu Lukaku and signed the Belgian international for £75 million from Everton.
Griezmann was heavily linked with a big money move to Manchester United earlier this summer but decided to remain with Atletico following their failure to get their transfer ban lifted, which prevented them from registering new players.
He tweeted after Man United 4-0 win over Swansea City and though he appeared to be teasing Man United fans with his tweets, Balague believes his comments has something to do with his current situation and he is possibly regretting not moving to Man United.
Balague claimed the 26-year-old deep down is considering a move to Old Trafford.
“He is with a team which has played in Champions League finals and also won the league recently – more recently than Manchester United – so he is already at one of the top teams in Europe”, Balague told Sky Sport.
“He is playing with the fans and he will continue to do that with teasing messages but it is quite clear he will consider a move to Old Trafford next summer. Quite clearly, he was determined to go to Manchester United and it’s just the fact he didn’t want to let Atletico Madrid down while they couldn’t sign anyone that made him decide to stay.”
“He had made his mind up to go to Old Trafford though, so we will see what happens as 12 months is a long time.”
With Lukaku – who has scored three goals for United in the league this season – already in the fold, a move for Griezmann this summer is definitely no more in Mourinho’s plans. The Portuguese boss is on the look-out for a winger and a full-back.
Griezmann has a whopping £86m release clause.
