Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has already bolstered his squad with three news signings this summer while the option of adding the fourth in the wide position is still in the balance.
Mourinho wants a winger and his prime target had been Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic, and though all hopes are not totally lost – since anything can happen in football – the Portuguese boss has not been successful in getting his preferred man for the position.
And that makes the case for Anthony Martial and also necessary for the United boss to look inward and recognize the talent yearning for more playing time. The French forward was a hit in his first season at United after joining them as the most expensive teenager in football but struggled under Mourinho last term.
However, he was impressive in United’s pre-season tour and it is not just about coming off the bench to score in each of United’s league games against West Ham and Swansea City this new season but his sensation display in those few minutes signaled the 21-year-old is getting back to his best.
And with the rumour of his exit from Old Trafford that has lingered around him for a long period finally dying down and Mourinho’s decision to keep faith with him, it is expected that would translate to more action on the pitch, and possibly replace Marcus Rashford who has been poor with his finishing in the starting line-up.
Martial’s pace, dribbling and composure in front of goal makes him a productive attacking threat for United and with his confidence growing per match he stand a chance to make Mourinho see no reason for bringing Perisic to Old Trafford.
And while Perisic is nearing the end of his career, Martial has age on his side to develop his game.
