Arsenal dropped from the first quartet of the Premier League and the failings of the Gunners was not because of the absence of quality players but it was partly attributed to the mentality of the squad.
In a bid to make the Gunners squad more formidable even psychologically, Arsenal have appointed former Liverpool fitness coach Darren Burgess, who will serve the Gunners in the capacity of a fitness coach with the medical, psychology and performance analysis backroom staffers, per report.
Arsene Wenger had reportedly rejected the appointment of a Sporting director as he did not want anybody to be imposed on him. The French tactician has himself chosen Burgess to work with him in order to raise the performance of his team.
Until this appointment with the Gunners, Burgess was PORT Adelaide fitness coach in the AFL but he has been given the past to pick his own replacement.
Before agreeing the move to Arsenal, Burgess had offers from European sporting franchises – including the NBA Brooklyn Nets last year but he could not resist the opportunity to work in the Premier League with Arsenal.
“The opportunity to return to the English Premier League and work at one of the world’s most successful sporting organisations in Arsenal is an opportunity I simply couldn’t refuse,” Burgess said when quizzed about a move to Arsenal.
There has been calls from pundits and fans for Arsene Wenger to be sacked but the move to sign Burgess is one that might eventually complement the efforts of Wenger and bring out the best in the Gunners squad.
