Liverpool have had troubles getting their transfer target this summer, but the signing of Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke and Andrew Robertson could pass for a successful transfer window.
The manager of Liverpool Jurgen klopp has reiterated his desire to add player(s) to his squad before the close of the transfer window and reports have now emanated that the Reds are interested in signing Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes.
Klopp is short of options in defence following the brawl with Momadou Shakho and he has been linked with a move to Dutch centre-back Virgil Van Dijk all summer. The Saints have refused the advances of Liverpool for Van Dijk despite the transfer request tendered by the defender.
The Reds cannot wait for Van Dijk forever and they have turned their attention to Howedes, who was at the heart of the defence of German side Schalke last season, reports DW Sports.
Howedes is dubbed as a versatile defender that can play in any of the defensive positions and Liverpool are prepared to fork out as much as £18million to lure him to Anfield, according to the report.
The 29-year-old played along Joel Matip in Schalke, and so it wouldn’t take him so much time to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League.
Howedes hinted that he would fancy a move the Premier League when he dismissed the possibility of joining another Bundesliga club.
“I’ve said I won’t move within [Germany] and can picture a move abroad,” Howedes told Funke Sport. “As of today, that point in time hasn’t come.
“I received offers from other clubs after the surprising demotion from captain… that my agent checked and answered.”
