Jose Mourinho has a knack for going after players on the transfer radar of his rivals. Time was when Pedro Rodriguez was heavily linked with a move to Man United but Chelsea’s then manager Mourinho, sanctioned a deal for him and usurp United to a deal for the former Barcelona man.
After beating Chelsea to the signature of Romelu Lukaku, Man United suddenly emerged front runners for the signature of French star Tiemoue Bakayoko.
In the Early hours of Monday, the Express reported that Man United agreed a fee for Bakayoko to the tune of £40m and it was £5m more than what the Premier League Champions Chelsea were offering. However, a twist has emerged on Tuesday that Chelsea are closing in on a deal for the player.
Skyports revealed that the 22-year-old will have his medical with Chelsea this week, in time for their pre-season tour in China. He had picked up a knee injury at the close of last season and underwent a surgery, which is why despite agreeing personal terms with Chelsea, he has not completed the move.
Talks are currently ongoing and a fee in the region between £35m and £40m is likely to be struck between the Premier League and Ligue 1 Champions. Nonetheless, Chelsea are yet to meet his valuation.
Chelsea knows it will be a huge blow for them if they allow Bakayoko slip through their grasp to Man United. Mourinho itches to spend money and £40m is a little sum for him to pay for a player he wants.’
Man United have also been linked with a move for Nemanja Matic, their refusal to sell may be what has steered Mourinho’s interest in Bakayoko.
