Chelsea’s defeat to Burnley in their Premier League opener has been an eye opener for the London side and this has left Antonio Conte condemned to bolster his squad before the close of the season.
While Liverpool have been credited with interest for Dutch centre-back Virgil Van Dijk all season, Chelsea have now emerged as favorite to sign the want-away defender, this is according to report.
Van Dijk signed a new contract with Southampton last year but he was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool this summer until the Reds were forced to apologise over their approach for the star.
The Dutch defender tabled a transfer request to his club but they claim they would not listen to offers for the player from Liverpool, leaving the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City as favourite for his signature.
According to Yahoo sports, Chelsea may have to fork out as much as £70million to sign Van Dijk. This would make him the most expensive defender in the world, a deal no club might be able to broker this season.
However, Antonio Conte has been handed a bogus transfer warchest, he may spend a huge chunk of the money on Van DIjk.
At Chelsea, Van Dijk is unlikely to dislodge the likes of Rudiger or Cahill to a starting berth, which is why he reportedly wants a move to Anfield.
