Deal on: Arsenal to agree deal for top-notch centre-back

Arsenal will move in quickly to sign out-of-favour Chelsea defender Gary Cahill this month.

It’s three days to the close of the January transfer window, and Unai Emery’s side are trying to push a deal through for the defender.

Arsenal took another serious blow to their backline when they were dumped out of the FA Cup in the fourth round by Manchester United.

The Gunners suffered a 3-1 defeat at Manchester United, but got hit with something bigger that could scupper their chances of finishing ahead of Chelsea this season, as they eye a return back to the Premier League.

Gunners lost last summer signing Sokratis Papastathopoulos to an ankle injury in clash against United, and will be without veteran defender Laurent Koscielny who got caught on the face while on duty by Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku.

Spaniard Nacho Monreal and Dinos Mavropanos are yet to hit full fitness, which leaves the backline too threadbare.

Emery will be allowed to sign reinforcements on loan this term, and Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has been linked with the north London outfit.

Cahill can’t break into Maurizio Sarri’s Premier League side, and Blues have refused to renew his contract.

The player has been given the greenlight to leave in the coming days. Crystal Palace have also been credited with interest in the forgotten defender.

  1. Its now clear for everyone to see that it was not Wenger’s fault at Arsenal. It is the Arsenal board’s problem when it comes to releasing transfer funds. How can a club fighting for a top four position rely on loan signings while other teams dish out vast amounts of money for quality players. I now wish to see this club relegated and boycott from fans.
