Dutch centre-back Virgil Van Dijk has handed Southampton a transfer request as he wants out of the Club, reports the Express.
The 26-year-old centre-back has been left in the dark over his future following the Saints refusal to accepts offers for the him. He was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool earlier in the summer but their interest in the player was rocked when they were reported to the Premier League by the Saints.
The Reds have since apologised with statement over the move but the player has been training on his own, casting further doubts over his future and bringing his career to a halt.
In a statement he released, he said:
“It is with regret that I can confirm that I have today handed in a transfer request to leave Southampton,” his statement read.
“Unfortunately I feel I have n alternative after I was give notice of the club’s intention to impose a disciplinary sanction against me of a fine equivalent to 2 weeks wages.
“Over the past six months I have held numerous discussions with representatives of the board, the former manager Claude Puel as well as the new manager Mauricio Pellegrino to inform them all of my desire to leave the club in search of a new challenge.
“I am incredibly ambitious and want to achieve as much as I possible can to fulfil my potential in what is a very short career as a professional footballer. I want to play European football again and challenge for major honours and as such I would like Southampton to condor the interest in me from top clubs should it still exist.”
He added: “I have been left frustrated by the club’s position that I am not for sale and am disappointed that enquiries from multiple top clubs have been consistently rebuffed.”
Although Liverpool were thought to be his next destination, Chelsea emerged as favourite and their were report earlier today that Blues will complete a £60million move for him.
However, Van Dijk is wary of his chances at Chelsea given the plethora of options at the disposal of Antonio Conte. It is believed that he would fancy a move to Liverpool where he is sure to play regularly.
