Arsene Wenger has been questioned over his transfer policies that sees him linked with players for long time before signing them. Lacazette was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal last summer but for meager sums offered by the Gunners. So why did he leave it late to sign him, when the French striker might have been the difference for Arsenal last term?
The tale for the Gunners has not been any different in this window. Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez has been on the transfer radar of Arsenal since last summer and reports by the Express has indicated that the player wants a move to Arsenal despite offers from Italian side Roma.
Mahrez endured a horrendous season with the dethroned Premier League Champions and he wants to call time on his career with them. He reportedly handed a transfer request to Leicester City at the close of last season, and Arsenal reignited their interest in the skillful star.
In Mahrez, Roma have seen replacement for Mohamed Salah who was sold to Liverpool and they are determined to sign the Algerian star. Nonetheless, a report by the Sun claims Mahrez wants to remain in the Premier League and he fancies a move to Arsenal.
The Gunners have made Thomas Lemar their priority target but the asking fee of Monaco has been a stumbling block to the deal. The transfer market is heavily inflated but Mahrez is expected to come cheaper than Lemar.
Leicester City manager Shakespeare confirmed on Friday that indeed he received offers for Riyad Mahrez from Roma.
“I think I was quoted as saying on the last press day there had been no bids,” he said.
“There has been a bid from Roma. I was told afterwards so I want to put the record straight.
“It was politely declined on the basis it was a low offer.”
Apparently, they will sell the player if the right offer is made and he is valued at £35m.
