Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has bemoaned the dearth of the top-notch players in his squad and if he remains at helms of the Blues beyond this season, then we’d expect the London Club to be heavily involved in the summer transfer window.
According to latest report, Chelsea are weighing in on a deal for 24-year-old English and Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles.
Lascelles who is relatively unknown began his footballing career at Nottingham Forest, and after ascending the grades of the youth rank, Arsenal made a £5million bid for him that was out-rightly rebuffed by the Club before he signed his first professional contract with the club in March 2011.
He was sent on Loan to Stevenage before Newcastle United snapped him up in the summer of 2014. Although he spent another season on loan at Nottingham Forest, the 24-year has since returned to Newcastle and he is currently a regular figure at the heart of their defence, with the pleasure of being the captain of the side.
Chelsea are looking to add another English player to the likes of Ross Barkley and Danny Drinkwater and they heavily admire and want Lascelle, according to the Evening Standard.
The young centre-back was handed a contract extension at Newcastle in the October of last year but Chelsea can comfortably make an offer for him that will eclipse his current £50,000-a-week wages. The English star is also valued at 7,00 Mill. €, which is a paltry fee when you consider the inflated nature of the transfer window.
The Blues are already preparing for life after Gary Cahill who turns 33 in December.
