Chelsea missed by a mile in signing Leandro Peredes. Paris Saint-Germain pipped the FA Cup champions in scooping up the player, but assistant manager Gianfranco Zola says Chelsea are not in despair over finding Fabregas’ replacement.
Fabregas left for Monaco this month, but Chelsea are yet to find someone who fits the bill just like the former Arsenal man.
The Blues were knocked out of the race for the Zenit St Petersburg’s midfielder by French champions Paris Saint-Germain. The youngster is set to complete a move to join the Parisian club on Friday. It is understood the deal cost Paris Saint-Germain north of 40 million pounds.
One option is left for Blues and that is Cagliari’s Nicollo Barella. But luring out Barella this month is like baiting a snail out of it shell. The young midfielder is not ready to leave the Italian club, putting Chelsea in a difficult position.
Nonetheless, with six days left until the close of the January transfer window, Zola is optimistic they can get Fabregas replacement.
He said: “I’m not in a position where I can say more about that. It’s something we are talking with the club.
“It’s certainly an area where we could do, but it could be a problem if we have an injury. I think there is a good understanding between Maurizio and Marina (Granovskaia).”
