Eddie Newton, who is Chelsea’s chief scout, wants Ozyakup to switch back to his former club Arsenal in the summer.
During last month’s transfer window, the North London club reportedly made a €7m offer for the midfielder but the Turkish giants rejected the bid as they claimed they can’t let him go for any fee below €12m.
According to Newton while speaking to Aksam, it will be interesting to see Ozyakup return back to his former manager Arsene Wenger at the Emirates this summer.
“Ozyakup is a very good player,” he said (via SportWitness). “We followed him before. For me he’ll suit the Arsenal system. He’s technically strong, calm and composed on the ball and also a good passer.”
Arsenal reportedly sent scouts to spy on the player’s performance against Bayern Munich on Wednesday in the Champions League last-16 first leg tie, but the midfielder was left on the bench despite his Club being thrashed 5-0 by the Bundesliga powerhouse.
Özyakup’s deal with the Turkish side will expire by the end of the season and he might not renew his contract as there are no discussions between both parties over a new contract offer.
Arsene Wenger could get the player on a free transfer in the summer as he won’t be tied to any club by the end of the season.
Arsenal can also commence a pre-contract talk with the player according to FIFA transfer rules, but only time will tell if Wenger still values his former 25-year-old player.
