While Liverpool are holding on firmly to Barcelona target Philppe Coutinho, they will land Dutch centre-back as their fourth summer signing next week Thursday, this is according to Ian McGarry.
Van Dijk has been on the transfer radar of Liverpool from the opening of the transfer market and the Reds were even close to the signing of centre-back back in July for a whopping £50million. However, the Saints rebuffed the offer and reported Liverpool to the FA for tapping up the player.
Van Dijk had handed a transfer request to Southampton but he continues to be a players of the Saints as his coach manager Mauricio Pellegrino has refused to let go off the star. It is understood that Southampton are keen on selling the player but they do not want to sell him to Liverpool.
However, former Fleet Street journalist and Transfer Window podcast guest Ian McGarry has made a huge claim that the defender will sign for Liverpool next week.
“The whole thing of Van Dijk not for sale is a holding tactic,” McGarry explained.
“1) To get more money for the player out of the buying club, in this case Liverpool and 2) waiting until confirming a replacement to take over from Van Dijk.
“By this time next week (Thursday) Van Dijk will already be given a squad number by Liverpool and that’s where he’ll be playing his football this season.”
McGarry added: “Van Dijk has seen himself in the red jersey of Liverpool.
“In my experience if they’ve already in their minds moved club, then they would rather go to that club than another.
Liverpool are short of options in defence as Mamadou Sahko continues to be on the black list of Klopp. The Reds will be playing in the Champions League and other competitions, so they could do with one more centre-back.
Van Dijk has been also been on the radar of Chelsea but the Dutch stars favours a move to Liverpool as he’ll get more playing time there.
