Manchester City and Arsenal are locked in a two-horse race for Everton Senegalese star Idrissa Gueye.
The defender has been catching the eye at the Merseyside outfit and has been the fabric of Marco Silva’s midfield since joining the side from Villa Park in 2015.
Gunners are looking to strengthen their side this better half of the season, and are on hot pursuit for top quality players this term.
Target Gueye has also been linked with a move to join French champions Paris Saint-Germain in recent weeks, who had been tipped favourites to land the 29-year-old.
Manchester City could use him to fill Fernandinho’s shoes. The midfielder has been a pounding headache for Pep Guardiola, who is still scouring for his replacement.
Gueye checks well on all sides, but his age has him written off as the best pick as replacement for Brazilian.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are still an unbalanced side, despite starting on the front foot under Unai Emery this season.
Gueye is understood to have handed the club a request to leave after interest poured in from the Ligue One according to Sky Sports, however, Everton have denied such claims and further insisted the injured player will not leave the club.
Arsenal and City will be forced to look elsewhere. The Premier League sides will next face each other this week, during the weekend.
