Arsenal to agree deal for 21-year-old in-demand midfielder

French side AS Monaco have joined the race in securing Nicolo Barella’s signature, reports Calciomercato.

It is believed that the Ligue 1 club have shown interest in bringing the youngster to France when the January transfer window opens. The player has garnered increasing popularity among European scouts, and English side Arsenal are not left behind either.

The Gunners are believed to also be on the Italian’s trail as they seek to strengthen their squad. The Italy international has secured himself a place in Cagliari’s present and future plans. At the moment, Barella is an important player for the Serie A team.

While it is unlikely that the Italian team considers an offer during the mid-season transfer window, the fact that Barella’s performances keep attracting attention from top clubs means they may be unable to hold on to the youngster.

The 21-year-old midfielder has made 10 starts in the 2018/19 Serie A season, and has found the net once.

The Gunners have more than enough players in the middle of the park. They already acquired the services of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi in the summer, coupled with the array of midfield stars they currently boast. It remains to be seen how Unai Emery hopes to deploy the Italian midfielder if bought.
