Arsenal lock horns with Bayern Munich for box-to-box midfielder
Before last summer, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has always been criticised for his frugal nature in the transfer market as he failed to bolster his squad despite the obvious need for players. However, the French tactician unleashed Arsenal’s heavy transfer warchest in the market and signed some established players.
Granit Xhaka, who is currently top choice for Arsenal’s anchor midfield position, completed the move to the Emirates in €35m deal. He was joined by Germany international and tough-tackling centre back Shkodran Mustafi, who had another new centre-back Rob Holding from Bolton to contend with. They were unveiled as Gunners with Lucas Perez from Deportivo, who was the last player Wenger signed before the window was shut.
Despite the plethora of stars available to Arsene Wenger, Arsenal have had a calamitous season as their only hope at a trophy is the FA Cup. Their poor form has been blamed on injuries and the quality of the players. This has left Wenger with no choice than to start scouting players that can fire him to the title next term and latest report cited by Sport Bild claims Arsenal are interested in signing RB Leipzig star Naby Keita.
The 22-year-old has shone for his club this term, scoring four goals and providing eight assist, leading his club to second spot on the Bundesliga log. The report stated that Arsenal are not the only club in the chase of the player. Bundesliga holders Bayern Munich also want him to lace his boots for them but he could be lured to Arsenal by the thrills and competitiveness of the Premier League.
Wenger may just be looking at life beyond Santi Cazorla who’s perpetually sidelined with injury and Francis Coquelin who has refused to improve his game despite the chances handed to him.
Keita is valued at £26m.
