For the first time in a while, Arsenal have been able to silence their critique following the quality of players signed in the transfer window.
The Gunners signed on Stephan Lichsteiner, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Lucas Torreira, Bernd Leno and Matteo Guendouzi. For Arsenal legend Ray Parlour, Sokratis is about the most important signing for Arsenal as he has likened the star to former Gunners captain Tony Adams.
Sokratis rebuffed contract offers from Borrussia Dortmund to join Arsenal and he is expected to slot into the Gunners squad when the season comes alive.
Arsenal conceded goals with reckless abandon in the league last summer after letting in 54-goals, more than Burnley and Newcastle United who let in less goals.
In a bid to reinforce the Gunners backline, Sokratis was signed. He is expected to partner Laurent Koscielny as the centre-back pair when the French defender returns from an injury.
However, Parlour believes in Sokratis, Arsenal may have already signed to the new Adams.
“Arsenal badly needed to improve their defense following last season and Emery has clearly made that a priority this summer,” Parlour told bWIN.
“I think Sokratis is a good signing and he will be a no-nonsense, traditional defender in the mould of Tony Adams rather than someone who wants to play out from the back.
“Sokratis is very experienced and he’s a big game player with great leadership qualities.
“The fact he knows [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang and [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan so well is a bonus too.”
Arsenal are currently on their pre-season tour in Singapore and they will begin their Premier league campaign against Manchester City.
