Sadly, Antonio Conte’s lost to Arsene Wenger in yesterday’s Carabao semi-final return leg clash and he has blamed injuries for his loss. Chelsea were ahead in the early minutes of the match through Eden Hazard’s goal, but the goal was canceled out by the Gunners via Antonio Rudiger’s own-goal, and then Granit Xhaka put the game beyond Chelsea’s reach in the 60th minute.
Reacting during the post-match conference, Antonio Conte confessed he didn’t intend to give Ross Barkley his debut, but the injury picked up by Brazilian winger Willian in the 30th minute forced him to bring the England international into the game. The introduction of the £15million-rated player couldn’t influence the result as the Blues failed to get the much-needed equalizing goal.
“I was a bit forced to play with Barkley. He’s a really good player and important for Chelsea, but needs bit of time to get used to playing for Chelsea,” he said.
The Italian manager admits that he would have brought Alvaro Morata into the game instead of Ross Barkley, but the Spaniard was out due to back injury.
“We don’t have many players to make substitutions. Morata was out,” Conte said.
According to Conte, Willian’s injury is not as serious as he first thought. He told reporters that the Brazilian is not in serious pain and he hopes to return to action as soon as possible.
“He said he felt a problem in his hamstring but he doesn’t think it will be a serious injury,” the Italian tactician said.
Arsenal will be up against Manchester City in the final of the competition. The Citizens were able to overcome Bristol City challenge in Tuesday’s fixture. Manchester City defeated the Championship side 5-3 on aggregate to set up an all-Premier League final.
