Unai Emery has revealed that Arsenal are looking to sign a centre-back in the January transfer window, this is according to reports.
Aside conceding goals with reckless abandon, Arsenal will be without four of their defenders when they take on Southampton in the Premier League this weekend.
Rob Holding and Konstantinos Mavropanos are currently banjaxed with injuries. While Sokratis Papstathopoulos is serving suspension, Shkodran Mustafi is nursing a minor hamstring injury.
Thankfully, Laurent Koscielny is back and will feature against Qarabag but the French defender only recovered from a long term injury recently.
If Arsenal must maintain their good form for the hectic festive period and second half of the season, they must reinforce their defence.
“I think if we can take one player to help us at centre-back, I think it’s a good option,” Emery said.
“The transfer (window) is not easy… Koscielny is coming back and for the team it’s very important he is coming back.
“Then we are going to wait and see how Mavropanos is improving with his injuries, because he is also a centre-back who can help us.
“Another option we can play with two, with three, Nacho Monreal and Lichtsteiner can play in this position. I prefer to use, if we can, a specialist centre-back.”
The January transfer window is fast approaching and the Gunners are linked with the signing of Eric Bailly of Man United and Gary Cahill of Chelsea. It is left to be seen who they eventually sign.
