Jose Mourinho revealed on Friday that Luke Shaw and Ashley Young are set for a return to the first team after being sidelined due to injury. However, fresh reports according to the Times suggest that the club are set offer the former a new contract.
Shaw has been confirmed to be in the U-23 squad to face Swansea City on Monday but it is suggested that talks to extend his contract is being discussed between the player’s representatives and Manchester United.
The 22-year-old held the record of the most expensive teenager when he was signed for a record-breaking £30 million fee then as an 18 year old. However, he is yet to replicate his Southampton form due to injuries, leaving the left back position for the likes of Darmian and Daley Blind.
Shaw’s contract runs out next summer but Jose Mourinho is set to tie him down to a new contract as the England international still remains in his future plans.
Shaw, who currently earns in the region of £70k-a-week, has been criticised by Mourinho for his overreliance on the coaches in making on-field decisions but that looks to be a thing of the past since Jose is now set to offer him a new contract.
Manchester United have utilised the 3-4-1-2 formation in some games and Shaw’s attacking prowess can be utilised as a left fullback when they press the opposition.
