Zlatan Ibrahimovic is edging closer to his return to Old Trafford, with Manchester United offering him a new deal at the club.
The 35-year-old contract expired in June and was not renewed as he was still recuperating from a knee ligament injury he sustained in a Europa League match in April.
However, the Swedish hitman has stepped up his rehabilitation and look set to return to action earlier than scheduled.
United boss Jose Mourinho is keen to have the forward back in his team and a new contract will reportedly be finalised this week.
Ibrahimovic joined United after refusing to extend his contract with French giants PSG last summer. He was considered too old for the Premier League but proved his critics wrong with 17 goals in the English top-flight and another 11 in other competitions as he helped United to win the Community Shield and the EFL Cup.
Mourinho has signed Romelu Lukaku from Everton in a £75 million deal this summer while Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have both been impressive in their performances, with the latter grabbing one goal in each of their league matches this season.
Ibrahimovic return could see Martial and Rashford spending more time on the bench, with Mourinho now preferring Mhkirayan as a first team present and Lukaku already a confirmed first-team player.
Mhkitaryan played a few games alongside Ibrahimovic in the United’s final third last season but Mourinho could unleash the duo and Lukaku in a dreadful combination this season.
In the light of that, we look at how United may look with Ibrahimovic in the fold.
With De Gea between the sticks, Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Daley Blind complete a four man defence.
In the midfield Mourinho could deploy Henrik Mkhitaryan, Paul Pogba and Matic. While Lukaku can play from the right side of attack, Rashford on the left and Ibrahimovic in the middle.
Probable XI (4-3-3):
De Gea; Valencia, Bailly, Jones, Blind; Mkhitaryan, Matic, Pogba; Lukaku, Ibrahimovic, Mhkitaryan
