As expected, the Premier League top Guns are going to lock horns in the transfer window in a bid to bolster their squad as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Chelsea and Man United transfer target Dries Mertens has revealed that indeed his agent spoke with the Blues over a possible transfer to Stamford Bridge but he favors staying put with Napoli for the foreseeable future, reports Sky sports.
The 30-year-old versatile attacking midfielder was in blistering form for the whole of last season where he fired the Partenopei to a third place finish in the Seria A with 28 goals in 35 League appearances. He was handed a improve contract last week, which he accepted and signed.
Merten has been on the transfer radar of Man United and Chelsea but the contract he signed with Napoli has now put to bed any possible move for the player. His agent spoke with Chelsea as revealed by the player but no deal was pulled through for him.
“Yes there was interest [from Chelsea], and from other clubs also, but in my head there was never an intention to change clubs.
“This season was really good. I am going to try and be even better next year.
“Yes there is a buyout clause. But I’m happy at Napoli and I want to stay. I really like Italy. I am good there and they treat me good.”
Chelsea have been linked with a plethora of attacking players this term and it might not be long before a established player is added to the ranks of Chelsea.
The Blues played with a very thin squad last season and it they must push for the title or remain competitive, the need for reinforcement cannot be over emphasized.
Meanwhile, Man United endured an injury-filled season but to sign a 30-year-old attack will not be good for the Red Devils. Mourinho’s squad already has a number of players that have surpassed the twilight of their career.
