Arsenal have identified Borrussia Dortmund centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos as perfect feat for their side and they are already weighing on a deal for the star, per reports.
The 29-year-old Greek defender joined Dortmund in the summer of 2013 from Werder Bremen and since then, he’s been regularly featured for the side. Arsene Wenger has had the player on his transfer list for some time now and it appears that he will make a move for the player in the summer.
Arsenal currently have one of the worst defenses in the Premier League as they have conceded even more goals than Newcastle who lie 12th on the League table. Wenger is look to stem this defensive woes and he believes Papastathopoulos is the answer to the dilemma.
Arsenal are not the only side in the chase of the player, they have Manchester United, Chelsea and Juventus to contend with for his signature, claims Express Sport,.
However, Arsenal are dubbed as favourites for the player’s signature as their head of recruitment Sven Misilintat, who was the former Sporting Director of Borrussia Dortmund, will take advantage of his relationship with the club to broker a deal for Arsenal.
Mertesacker will retire at the end of the season but Rob Holding and Calum Chambers cannot be said to be quality defenders. Papastathopoulos is expected to come into the Gunners first team in the place of Laurent Koscielny or Shkodran Mustafi.
He is valued at £19.80m according to transfermarkt.
