Brazil international and Chelsea centre-back David Luis has been in the lime light for the wrong reason in recent time but it appears that he’s got the support of Chelsea own Roman Abramovich.
According to recent report, Abramovich wants Gary Cahill to be stripped of Chelsea’s captaincy and he wants the band to be handed to David Luis.
David Luis was resigned by Antonio Conte for Chelsea last summer and he was impressively at the heart of their defence when they conquered the league. He also started this season brightly but was dropped for the big game against Manchester United before the interlull.
While Conte has informed Luis and his other players that they must fight for and earn a place in his squad, Transfer Window podcast guest Ian McGarry claims that Abramovich likes Luis and views him as the perfect captain replacement for John Terry.
“David Luiz was returned to Chelsea because he’s one of Roman Abramovich’s favourite players,” he said on the podcast.
“He was not neccassarily the choice of anyone at the club on the coaching staff.
“He’s loved by the owner of the club who saw him as the long-term successor to John Terry as captain of the club, and the fact Gary Cahill remains as captain instead of Luiz is still the matter of debate in Roman Abramovich’ box every second weekend when they play at home.
“That was two fingers to Roman Abramovich by dropping him from the squad completely.”
Chelsea play West Bromwich Albion after the international break. Luis was allowed to rest as he was not called up to the National team. There is no telling if he will feature against the side this weekend.
While many lauded Conte for the decision to drop Luis, they are not in doubt over the quality of the Brazilian. He has been urged to be more disciplined but he is a great defender.
